One Photo a Day on Film | May 16 – June 21, 2023

I recently decided I want to get back into film photography. As a challenge to myself, I took one photo each day on 35mm film and documented 36 days of nothing-in-particular. My goal was to break my habit of taking mediocre and unnecessary pictures just to use up a roll (so I could see the one or two decent shots I’d taken,) and to dip my toes back into film photography by working with a variety of subjects in a variety of settings.

I shot these with my mom’s old Canon A-1 on Kodak Ultramax 400 film, and I’m mostly happy with how this roll turned out. The images I took outdoors turned out the best, in both exposure and color accuracy. But even indoors I managed to get adequate exposure on most of these. It helps that we have a big window and the potential for lots of natural light in our living room.

This was a fun project. I want to continue exploring film photography and getting better at it. I wasn’t particularly adventurous in this project, so next I’d like to make an effort to take more pictures in locations other than my house and backyard. And in the future I also want to try out a different film (I have some Kodak Porta 400 coming in a few days) that may do a little better with the indoor shots.

In the meantime, though, check out the pictures from my photo-a-day project in this gallery!
